belgian photographer bastiaan van aarle’s photographic documentary 01:20 is a play on solitude and solace and on the role time may or may not play in both. published at hatje cantz as a thin paperback for an easy leaf-through, it comprises 31 photos taken in and just outside of fisher village ólafsfjörður in the lonely north of iceland, one photo a day, 31 days in a row, always at precisely 1:20 in the morning, starting july 1, when the sun never sets under ólafsfjörður. we see darkness rise and colors fade across the book, and are left to question what to make of it, the bittersweet melancholy of nature’s elegy already impressed on our souls as we wonder …
