never judge a book by its cover? the jürgen and waltraud holstein collection, cataloged in this tremendous book published by taschen, sidesteps this popular idiom: all it cares about is its subject matter’s looks, “the most contemporary, artistically designed covers and jackets of everyday books”, as jürgen holstein writes in his introduction – one of several actually before we are allowed into the heart of this colossal production: the covers of roughly one thousand books, released between 1919 and 1933 by a total of about 250 berlin-based publishers, displaying visual bravado and creative courage of immense range. and while the book’s organizing structures are confusing at times, this takes nothing away from the wild pleasure of leafing through its pages again and again…
