right in time for the festivities of berlin’s annual entertainment extravaganza that is berlinale, the people who care to showcase canada’s cultural diversity – and those people clearly include us at nltc as well – are making sure everybody has a chance to share in that impression and experience. as of february 13, there is a brand-new canadian itunes channel replete with rich, multi-faceted movie productions – including a big selection of indigenous movies.

in addition to that, almost one hundred (!) movies either filmed in or heavily influenced by canada and its incredibly diverse landscape are featured in this year’s berlinale programming. these are three of our favorites…

montréal’s own kim nguyen filmed two lovers and a bear in the icy no-man’s community of apex on baffin island whose stark, freezing scenery plays off as inspiring contrast to the title’s two kids endeared to one another. gatineau, neatly sitting by the picturesque ottawa river, is home to philippe farladaue’s guibord s’en va-t-en guerre – a smart, yet breezy commentary on democracy’s tricky intricacies and their reward as well as their burden for the individual. maudie, finally, is aisling walsh’s documentary of oil painter maud dowley whose home in marshalltown, nova scotia features prominently in the movie as well.
